Why choose this treatment at The Courtyard Clinic?

Stops snoring
Helps with sleep apnoea
Improves health
Improves quality of life

Here at The Courtyard Clinic we have been treating snoring for over 12 years successfully. Snoring isn’t just an unfortunate habit, but it is also detrimental to health and wellbeing. We recognise this and the importance of treating it swiftly and effectively.

Effective sleep keeps your immune system strong, lowers stress and keeps you motivated with higher energy. A poor quality of sleep due to snoring can affect your relationships as well as your own happiness.

Other health conditions related to snoring:

  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
  • Memory loss
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Stress and depression
  • Stroke
  • Increased risk of trauma (Road Traffic Accidents for example)
  • Other medical conditions

What is Obstructive Sleep apnoea?

Snoring is often associated with a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) which is a prevalent condition with significant comorbidities associated with it. During sleep, the walls of your upper airway narrow and disrupt your normal breathing pattern. This can lead to brain microarousals and lack of oxygenation in the body systems. Not all snorers have OSA, but all apnoeics are snorers. If your snoring highlights any of the following symptoms, it may be an indication that you should seek further evaluation from a professional medical professional:

  • Witnessed breathing pauses during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Morning headaches
  • Sore throat or dry mouth upon awakening
  • Restless sleep
  • Gasping or choking at night
  • Chest pain at night
  • Your snoring is so loud it’s disrupting your partner’s sleep

Why treat snoring with your dentist?

DIY devices are inexpensive and readily available over the counter and online. However, they have been proven to be ineffective. Devices need to be custom made and adjusted to the individual over time. A bespoke, professional Mandibular Advancement Splint is much more likely to be successful.

Recently published studies show there is a direct relationship between teeth grinding (bruxism) and sleep apnoea, so dentists have become the first port of call for detection, diagnosis and treatment.

What are the steps to getting an anti-snoring device at The Courtyard Clinic?

Anti-snoring

After welcoming you into the clinic we will take the following steps:

Perform a full dental assessment to ensure the device is suitable for you
1
Take a full mouth Xray (OPG) to ensure your teeth will provide a suitable long term foundation for support of the device.
2
Carry out sleep apnoea screening questions and contact your GP if further support is required.
3
Take impressions of your mouth and further readings to set your anti-snoring device to the right position.
4
After this you will return for fit of the device and possible adjustments over time. It usually takes 3 weeks to make.
5
Expect the device to start working in 2 weeks.
