Root canal treatment (also known as endodontics) is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth, where the nerves and blood vessels of a tooth lie.

The infection is caused by bacteria in the mouth getting into this root canal system.

This can happen after:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • Failing fillings that are leaking
  • Trauma to teeth causing cracks into the nerve

When the bacteria enters the root canal system this causes the tissues around the end of the tooth to become swollen and infected with the likelihood of a dental abscess to form. This can make your tooth painful, and, in extreme cases, your face may become swollen. It is imperative to seek dental care as soon as you get any pains from your teeth to prevent this.

Signs you need a Root Treatment:

  • Swelling to the face or tissues in the mouth
  • Sensitivity
  • Pain on biting
  • Pain: from dull aches to consistent shooting pains

Aftercare

Root canal treatment can leave the tooth brittle. It is very important to look after your teeth after root canal treatment. Studies show placing a crown on top of a tooth that has had root canal treatment will protect the tooth from future fracture and increase the success rate of root canal treatment.

Avoid biting on hard foods until all your treatment is complete.

In most cases, it’s possible to prevent the need for further root canal treatment by:

  • Brushing and flossing
  • Ensure you see the hygienist at least every 6 months
  • Diet low in sugar and acids

The success rate of well placed root canal treatment is 95%.

Will it Hurt?

With advances in modern technology, root canal treatments are much easier to have done than they used to be. Most people report that it is similar to having a filling placed. Ask our dentists all your questions about the procedure to put your mind at ease.
