Government guidelines, produced jointly by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture, recommend that people should stay away from or reduce their intake of soda.
Other recommendations are that people consume 10 per cent fewer calories from added sugars daily. The added sugars are often added to food during processing to boost flavour but have little or no nutritional value.
The occasional soda or sugary drink as a treat is okay. However, habitual drinking of soda is what is dangerous. Excessive sugars lead to obesity, which is linked to problems such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
