3 Common Dental Myths – Debunked

3 common dental myths

Over the years of running our practice, we’ve heard all sorts of myths, stories and questions from our patients regarding oral hygiene and dental health. So, in this blog post, we thought we’d debunk three common dental myths from a professional’s perspective…

3 Common Dental Myths – Debunked

Myth 1 – Brushing Harder Means Cleaner Teeth

This is not true. Brushing too hard can cause damage to your teeth and gums. This can lead to problems like enamel wear and receding gums, which in turn can lead to tooth sensitivity. As well as this, if you brush too hard you can also wear away the white enamel on your teeth, making them look yellower and darker. It is much better to use a medium-soft toothbrush and not brush too aggressively. (Not sure which toothbrush might be best for you, your dentist will be able to advise one suitable for you!)

Myth 2 – I Don’t Need An Appointment If My Teeth Feel And Look Fine

Prevention is better than cure. Whilst you might not feel that you need an appointment, regularly seeing your dentist allows them to identify problems before they cause an issue. Not only does this save you from the pain and discomfort that comes with dental issues, but it also tends to be more cost-effective too. We recommend visiting your dentist at least twice a year for routine checkups.

Myth 3 – Flossing Can Create Gaps Between Your Teeth

Flossing correctly does not create new gaps between the teeth. However, gaps can occur due to flossing mistakes or poor technique. As well as this, when done correctly, flossing removes the debris that’s trapped between teeth and sometimes, this resulting space can be mistaken as a gap. It is important to floss your teeth at least once a day using the correct technique.
