What are the Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes?

We’ve all heard that electric toothbrushes are better than manual ones, but just how much better are they? How much of it is just a marketing ploy? In this post we’re going to run through five benefits of electric toothbrushes compared to manual, to help you make a more informed decision when choosing your next brush….

What are the Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes?

01. More effective at removing plaque

Many studies have compared the effectiveness of electric toothbrushes versus manual ones, and the overwhelming majority show that an electric toothbrush removes more plaque than a standard manual brush. One study found that those that use an electric toothbrush have healthier gums, less tooth decay and also keep their teeth for longer, compared with those who use a manual toothbrush.

02. Make brushing easier

Not only are electric toothbrushes easier for everyone to use, but they are a more accessible option for those with mobility impairments. They do most of the brushing for you making a thorough teeth clean much easier for those with arthritis and developmental disabilities.

3. Less likely to brush too hard

Brushing too hard can cause a number of dental issues including enamel wear and receding gums. It is often thought that electric toothbrushes are more damaging than manual toothbrushes, but this isn’t the case. This study found that when the two are compared, manual toothbrushes are more abrasive to teeth and gums than electric toothbrushes. Lots of modern electric toothbrushes also have a pressure sensor. This makes it even easier to avoid brushing too hard, something a manual brush obviously cannot do.

4. They create less waste

With only the brush head needing to be replaced every couple of months rather than the whole brush, electric toothbrushes create far less waste.

5. Timers and pacers assist thorough cleaning

Not only can electric brushes have pressure sensors, many also have timers. These help to ensure people are brushing for the full suggested 2 minutes. More advanced brushes even have pacers that alert every 30 seconds. This is to help the user spend an equal amount of time brushing each quadrant of the mouth. These features help to ensure that the user is brushing for an adequate amount of time each and every time they brush their teeth.
