1. Early intervention braces – give your child the best start at a great smile for life!

    20th May 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

Give your child the gift of a healthy, beautiful Confident Smile.

All parents want the best for their children, when it comes to dentistry that means straight teeth, properly sized jaws, a good profile and a broad, beautiful, happy smile. Our aim is to be a positive influence in your child’s dental health with preventative dentistry being our main focus. We believe in teaching children to take care of their teeth from an early age and monitoring them as they grow to ensure they develop properly and in good health.

Early intervention orthodontics helps expand children’s arches, allowing the adult teeth to come through in a healthier, straighter, more cosmetic position. This reduces crowding and improves the jaw position and the way the teeth bite. By starting at as young as 7 we are able to work with the child’s growing and developing jaws, making room for their teeth and thereby avoiding the need for the extraction of healthy teeth later which would have been traditionally necessary.
Indeed the American Orthodontic Association recommends that all children at the age of 7 yrs should have an orthodontic evaluation.

If you are interested in investigating early intervention treatment for your child, please give us a call on 01932 582949.

  2. Unhappy with your smile? Have you thought about discreet adult orthodontics?

    Braces aren’t just for teenagers!

This is something that we find ourselves discussing with our patients quite frequently at The Courtyard Clinic. Patients come into our practice in Chertsey to talk about improving their smiles and we love helping them get their confidence back. Most patients think veneers or crowns are the only option, and occasionally they are, however in a lot of cases straightening and whitening the teeth is the best option for the lifespan of the teeth and also to get the best cosmetic result.

We have a lot of experience with adult orthodontics (braces) at The Courtyard Clinic and we offer many options:

    1) Damon braces-
The Damon System is not just a new product, it’s a whole new way of treating patients. Conventional treatment often requires removal of healthy teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to make space. This approach is often uncomfortable, takes longer, and can leave a narrower arch and a flat profile. Damon smiles are full, natural 10-tooth smiles achieved with light biologically-sensible forces, and are specifically designed to improve the overall facial result of each patient

    2) Invisalign –
The Invisalign system is as close to invisible as possible with modern orthodontic systems. This very discreet system is removable and very comfortable to wear. Invisalign’s patented Clincheck 3D computerised system allows patients to see the projected finished result at the start of treatment. Invisaligns technology is evolving and we are now able to take on more complicated cases with this revolutionary system

    3) Social 6 braces-
This system attaches to the backs of the teeth so that nothing is visible in the patients smile, it is perfect for minor corrections of crowded teeth and can be finished in under 16 weeks in most cases.

So if you are concerned about your smile and want to improve it in a minimally invasive and cosmetic manner then we have all the options for you at The Courtyard Clinic. To have a free consultation regarding adult braces – give us a call on 01932 582949.

  3. Crowns in a day at The Courtyard Clinic

    12th May 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

Imagine a dental practice where you can go and have your new false tooth made and fitted during a single visit and in as little as an hour. Advances in technology have allowed us to provide this to you at The Courtyard Clinic using CEREC technology

CEREC is a revolutionary technology that enables your dentist to design, fabricate and fit a new crown, veneer, onlay in a single visit, a procedure that would normally take at least two weeks!

How does this CEREC technology work?

Your dentist will prepare your tooth in the normal way he/she would before fitting a crown. However, instead of using “dental putty” to take an impression of your tooth, which many patients find very unpleasant, a digital image is taken using a special camera. This image is then converted into a 3D digital model of your tooth, which is used as a guide to design your new restoration. Once your dentist is happy with the newly designed tooth, it is sent to an onsite milling machine, which creates your new tooth from a high-quality ceramic block.

A ceramic block is chosen to match the colour and appearance of your natural teeth. Once the crown or veneer has been milled, the dentist may characterise it and stain it bring a real life like appearance to the restoration, before either polishing it or glazing it in a furnace. Your new restoration is then ready to be cemented into place onto your prepared tooth from as little as 1 hour following being prepared.

CEREC restorations have an equal lifespan to traditional crown and bridgework and can often require less preparation of the tooth as they utilise modern “adhesive” technology.

If you need a crown, veneer, onlay or inlay then give us a call on 01932 582949 to book in for a CEREC restoration today.

  4. Treatment available for people who grind their teeth

    6th May 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

There are many different treatment options for people who grind their teeth, the symptoms can range from mild jaw pain up to severe chronic headaches.

Anti-inflammatories can help with pain, while anti-anxiety drugs such as diazepam are effective muscle relaxants.
Osteopaths, chiropractors and psychologists all use strategies to reduce tension in the head and neck area, as well as addressing underlying mental stress.

The Bruxism Association recommends hypnotherapy, and some studies support its use. In 1991, a report in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnotherapy found it could reduce grinding noticeably, with results lasting for up to 36 months.
According to some experts injecting Botox (botulinum toxin) into the masseter muscles of the jaw is also worth trying.

The grinding itself can be prevented through use of a plastic device (called an occlusal splint), worn at night to protect teeth. If unconscious tooth-grinding occurs during the day, teaching the patient to be aware of it can break the cycle.

Here at The Courtyard Clinic our dental experts are trained in establishing the cause of your tooth grinding and in the provision of treatment to cure it and protect your precious teeth.

  5. 10 tips for a healthy smile you can be proud of!

    3rd May 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

    1) Brush twice daily for at least 2 minutes making sure you clean all surfaces of the teeth
    2) Use something once daily to clean between your teeth- either dental floss or interproximal brushes- brushing alone will only clean around 60% of the teeth leaving 40% uncleansed.
    3) Keep refined sugars to a minimum- it is the frequency of sugar intake which is the most important factor leading to decay, for example 1 sugar in your coffee/tea five times a day would put you at a higher risk of decay that 5 sugars in your one coffee/tea a day.
    4) Straightening the teeth makes them easier to clean- anyone with crooked teeth will tell you it is very difficult to keep them healthy- straightening the teeth with simple adult orthodontics (which can be almost invisible) helps to improve the look of your smile and also make it easier for you to clean
    5) Regular visits to the dentist and hygienist will help to prevent you having more complicated problems with your teeth- prevention is better than the cure!
    6) If you have missing teeth these can be replaced with dental implants which are the closest thing we have to natural teeth
    7) If you have a loose old denture which falls out when you eat we can make you a new tighter fitting one or replace it with dental implants
    8) Whiter smiles always look healthier- we can whiten your teeth either in the practice or at home to give your teeth back a more youthful and attractive appearance.
    9) Often if you grind your teeth they may appear shorter than they once where, we can build these teeth back up to their correct length which can make you look many years younger!
    10) If you have many crowns of different colours on your front teeth we can replace your old crowns with new natural looking all porcelain crowns that match your natural teeth.

If you feel you need help with any of these problems give us a call on 01932 582949 and we can help!
