What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is where a tooth-like covering completely caps and covers a broken-down tooth.

The purpose of a dental crown is to restore its shape and size, improve appearance and improve the mouth’s strength and function.

What can a dental crown treat?

A dental crown is a restorative solution to the following:

  • A decayed tooth
  • A broken or cracked tooth
  • To support a tooth which is heavily filled
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To cover misaligned or discoloured teeth if the teeth can’t be moved or bleached
  • To restore the shape of a tooth
  • To restore a dental implant

The Courtyard Clinic Ethos:

Crowns

We believe in using treatment methods that are kind to teeth, strong and aesthetic.

A dental crown is usually fitted over two appointments:

1. Preparation of the tooth
In your first appointment, our dentists will take an x-ray of your mouth to assess the root and tooth structure.

If the tooth is suitable for a crown a local anaesthetic will then be used if required and the tooth prepared gently for a crown.

Usually, a digital iTero scan is taken of your existing tooth so that the crown can be custom made by the laboratory to fit your mouth. We will take photos to get the aesthetics right.

A temporary crown is fitted and placed to protect the existing tooth between appointments.

2. Crown fitting
Your crown will be permanently cemented in place. We will only fit the crown if you are completely comfortable and happy with the end result.

How do we get the aesthetics right?

We use digital technology to ensure the fit is optimum. We conduct digital smile designs with our lab to mock up your new teeth to ensure the size and shape is in harmony with your other teeth.

During the appointment we use macro photography to highlight the fine characterisations of your other teeth to include in the lab made crown if you are only having one or two made. We look at the fine detail such as colour transitions in your teeth, translucent areas, white flecks etc so we can include this in your crown, if you wish, so the new crown blends in seamlessly. However, if you are having several crowns made, we can alter the nature of your smile as it currently is to give you a smile upgrade you have always wished for!

Why Crown Teeth?

Crowns
  • Protects a decayed tooth from further damage
  • Protects a tooth after a root canal treatment
  • Holds a cracked tooth together
  • Improves the appearance of the tooth and mouth
  • To support a false tooth
  • Restore implants
