1. Got dentures? Dental implants improve your life

    26th October 2016 by thecourtyardclinic

smile teeth beautyIf you’ve worn dentures, a dental implant can make those dentures more secure – so they become like your natural teeth.

    Key takeaways:

    • Dental implants are the next best thing to having your own teeth, as they look and feel natural.
    • Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or all your teeth.
    • A dental implant can make dentures more secure, so they are like your natural teeth.

The dental implant, typically made of titanium, serves as the replacement for the tooth root – the very foundation of a natural tooth. Because it is placed in the jawbone and fuses with your natural bone, the dental implant forms a sturdy base for your replacement teeth.

  2. Gum disease- we can help!

    31st August 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

Gum disease (also known as periodontitis or periodontal disease) is one of the most common disease in the modern world. The disease can progress for many years with no symptoms and thus the first sign of the disease can be when the teeth start to become mobile- by this stage the damage has been done and the supporting bone of the teeth has been lost. Gum disease is caused by bacteria that grow on the tooth surface, the body defends itself against these microorganisms by attacking them as well as the the bone and gum around them.

The symptoms of gum disease if there are any will be redness or bleeding of the gums while brushing teeth, a receding gum line, halitosis and eventually loose teeth.

Gum disease has also been linked to other diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes amongst others

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT GUM DISEASE?

Regular visits to the hygienist and dentist to screen for and treat the condition

Good oral hygiene including brushing 2x daily with an appropriate technique as well as  cleaning between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes 1x daily

    Stop smoking

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU HAVE ADVANCED GUM DISEASE?

There are various treatments offered by general dentists as well as periodontists (specialist gum dentists) to stabilise the condition if it is caught early enough.

Once bone is lost it is very difficult to get back.

WHAT TREATMENT IS AVAILABLE FOLLOWING LOSS OF TEETH?

Once a patient has lost their teeth to gum disease there are multiple options available for replacing them. These include:

    DENTURES
    BRIDGES
    IMPLANTS

    WHY IS MAINTENANCE SO IMPORTANT?

Following treatment for gum disease if dentures/bridges or implants are placed it becomes even more important for the patient to maintain good oral hygiene, to not smoke and to keep up regular visits with the hygienist and dentist.

So if you feel that you may have gum disease or would like to discuss the options for replacing teeth following gum disease give us a call on 01932 58294.

  3. Is cosmetic dentistry for you?

    28th August 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

img1.jpg   Here at The Courtyard Clinic our priority to provide our patients and their families with happy and healthy smiles. A number of our patients come to us to improve the appearance of their smiles, our expert dentists are all well trained in advanced cosmetic dentistry and so are more than happy to help. Here are the 5 main ways we help patients achieve bright, brilliant smiles:

    1) Tooth whitening: tooth whitening also known as dental bleaching is a simple and non invasive way of giving our patients a more youthful smile. It involves the placement of hydrogen peroxide gel either in the clinic or in thin plastic trays at home. Many of our patients go up to 7 shades lighter!

    2) Tooth straightening: Often patients will be unhappy with the position of a certain tooth or teeth. The best way to align the teeth is by use of adult orthodontics or braces. Traditional metal braces is still the gold standard of treatment however there are many other options which can be more cosmetic and much quicker than the traditional 2 years of treatment. Treatments such as Damon, Invisalign, Inman Aligner and Social 6 Lingual braces are all available for patients to get the smile they always wanted.

    3) Cosmetic bonding: Patients will sometimes be unhappy with existing visible fillings at the front of the mouth, or may want to correct small discrepancies in the shape of position of their teeth. Cosmetic bonding can be used to change the shape of teeth often without drilling away any of the natural tooth. This “no drills/no injection” technique is fantastic especially for our nervous patients!

    4) Replacing missing teeth: missing teeth can provide an unharmonious smile which many patients are embarrassed of. These spaces can not only be a cosmetic issue but also a functional one with the surrounding teeth drifting an affecting the bite.

    5) Porcelain veneers or crowns: if the teeth have multiple cosmetic issues i.e. problems with a combination of colour, position and shape then porcelain veneers or crowns can be used. Often a patient will have old crowns which they are unhappy with which can be replaced for more cosmetic materials. In specific cases porcelain veneers can be used to provide a beautiful smile- this is frequently used for the “Hollywood smile” appearance that many people desire. If you are unhappy with your smile then give us a call- many of our patients have been putting off improving their smile for many years,  all of our patients who have improved their smiles wish they did it earlier! Call 01932 582949 and book in for a complimentary smile consultation today!

  4. Dental Implants: a time machine for lost teeth

Dental implants have changed the face of dentistry over the last 25 years. It used to be that if you lost a tooth the only options were to live with the space, have a removable denture or have a dental bridge held off the adjacent teeth. None of these solutions were ideal and all of them require some form of extra load being placed on the remaining teeth.

A dental implant is a small titanium screw which is placed in the bone of the jaw to replace the missing tooth or teeth roots. The bone of the jaw grows towards the titanium screw and it becomes integrated into the jaw, it can then have a tooth or many teeth built on top of it.

    Who can have dental implants??
If you have good general health then dental implants will almost certainly work for you. However, habits such as heavy drinking or smoking can increase the number of problems associated with initial healing and thereafter may negatively influence the long-term health of gum and bone surrounding each implant. Remaining teeth might also be compromised making treatment planning less certain.

How do you choose your implant dentist?

The placement of dental implants requires the additional training following qualification as a dentist, make sure your dentist has been appropriately trained and is experienced. Using a dentist who only uses the highest quality materials is also to be advised, there are some dental implant companies who do not have a lot of evidence supporting their product. Here at The Courtyard Clinic our implant surgeon is extremely experienced and we only use the best implant materials to make sure we provide the highest success rates for our patients.

If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to see if you are suitable for dental implants, give Alison a call today on 01932 582949 and book in for a free consultation.

  5. Loose dentures? A thing of the past at The Courtyard Clinic, Chertsey.

    11th November 2013 by thecourtyardclinic

The team at The Courtyard Clinic is happy to announce that they are now providing ‘All On 4’  Dental Implant treatments in Chertsey!

    loose dentures

This procedure, also known as “Smiles in a Day”, allows patients who have poorly fitting dentures or many teeth with a hopeless prognosis,  to regain the confidence in their smile with a fixed in solution. It is perfect for patients who are fed up of loose dentures on the top or bottom arch, and who want a more comfortable and aesthetic solution to their missing teeth.
    HOW DOES IT WORK?

All on 4 is a modern technique which utilizes four dental implants, positioned in such a way that the existing jaw bone is fully maximized. These dental implants are then attached to permanent teeth replacements on the same day, providing an immediate effective solution for missing teeth.

BENEFITS OF ‘ALL ON 4’ DENTAL IMPLANTS

LESS COMPLICATED – In most cases more complicated procedures like a bone grafting and sinus lifting procedure are not necessary to complete dental implant treatment. This reduces surgery time, overall treatment time and cost
FASTER- Teeth in a day, due to the design of the implants,  in most cases patients can leave with their brand new smile that day!
LESS PAINFUL– Less implants means less surgery and so less post operative trauma
CHEAPER – As less implants are required compared to traditional implant retained bridges treatment cost is reduced.

Please contact Alison today on 01932 582949 for a free NO OBLIGATION consultation today if you have loose dentures or teeth and want to do something about it.
