1. For Most, Implants Beat Dentures, But At a Price

    implant in the jaw bone

Dental implants are an excellent option to dentures, but they come at a higher cost than bridges and dentures. With the overall improved stability of dental implants (no more loose dentures), they might be worth the cost. Some dental insurance plans cover the cost of implants.

    Key takeaways:

    • Dental implants are now the preferred treatment for people with a missing tooth or a set of missing teeth.
    • Implants are permanent, often attached with a titanium screw to the jawbone and can be worn without discomfort.
    • Patients find it easy to maintain the implants compared to the dentures. The implants are also healthier to the gums and to the bone.

Implants also will help protect your bones over time. “The screw in your jawbone will trick the body into thinking you still have teeth,” said Dr. Ira Cheifetz, president of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. “The bone continues to grow and thrive.”

  2. Is cosmetic dentistry for you?

    28th August 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

img1.jpg   Here at The Courtyard Clinic our priority to provide our patients and their families with happy and healthy smiles. A number of our patients come to us to improve the appearance of their smiles, our expert dentists are all well trained in advanced cosmetic dentistry and so are more than happy to help. Here are the 5 main ways we help patients achieve bright, brilliant smiles:

    1) Tooth whitening: tooth whitening also known as dental bleaching is a simple and non invasive way of giving our patients a more youthful smile. It involves the placement of hydrogen peroxide gel either in the clinic or in thin plastic trays at home. Many of our patients go up to 7 shades lighter!

    2) Tooth straightening: Often patients will be unhappy with the position of a certain tooth or teeth. The best way to align the teeth is by use of adult orthodontics or braces. Traditional metal braces is still the gold standard of treatment however there are many other options which can be more cosmetic and much quicker than the traditional 2 years of treatment. Treatments such as Damon, Invisalign, Inman Aligner and Social 6 Lingual braces are all available for patients to get the smile they always wanted.

    3) Cosmetic bonding: Patients will sometimes be unhappy with existing visible fillings at the front of the mouth, or may want to correct small discrepancies in the shape of position of their teeth. Cosmetic bonding can be used to change the shape of teeth often without drilling away any of the natural tooth. This “no drills/no injection” technique is fantastic especially for our nervous patients!

    4) Replacing missing teeth: missing teeth can provide an unharmonious smile which many patients are embarrassed of. These spaces can not only be a cosmetic issue but also a functional one with the surrounding teeth drifting an affecting the bite.

    5) Porcelain veneers or crowns: if the teeth have multiple cosmetic issues i.e. problems with a combination of colour, position and shape then porcelain veneers or crowns can be used. Often a patient will have old crowns which they are unhappy with which can be replaced for more cosmetic materials. In specific cases porcelain veneers can be used to provide a beautiful smile- this is frequently used for the “Hollywood smile” appearance that many people desire. If you are unhappy with your smile then give us a call- many of our patients have been putting off improving their smile for many years,  all of our patients who have improved their smiles wish they did it earlier! Call 01932 582949 and book in for a complimentary smile consultation today!

  3. Further questions over safety of dental amalgam

    10th August 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

    http://www.youputwhatinmymouth.com/research/breakdown-of-film-trailer

This link shows a trailer for an upcoming documentary on questioning the safety of dental amalgam for use in fillings. Here at The Courtyard Clinic we are a mercury free practice and no longer use dental amalgam. The British Dental Association and Department of Health currently view dental amalgam as safe for purpose in the NHS and the majority of dental practices in the UK continue to use the material. In other areas such as in Scandinavia the material is no longer used.

As a practice we have made the decision to no longer use amalgam fillings containing mercury instead opting for modern white filling materials which are mercury free, and are designed to look as close to natural teeth as possible. We remove all of our dental amalgam using high volume suction to remove the vapour as well as carrying out the procedure under a seal called rubber dam,  which isolates the mouth from the amalgam vapour.

If you are concerned about the mercury in your fillings and would like to have a chat or a complimentary consultation,  to discuss upgrading them for more modern white materials then please give us a call on 01932 582949 or book in online.

  4. Sensitive teeth? The team at The Courtyard Clinic can help!

    10th April 2014 by thecourtyardclinic

    For_sensitive_teeth1

Sensitive teeth is a very common reason for our patients to come and see us. There are many reasons behind sensitive teeth, here are some of the most common:

    • Brushing injuries: usually on the outer surfaces of the teeth facing the lips and the cheeks. Brushing hard can damage the gums and make them recede, exposing the sensitive root surface. The root surface is not covered with the hard enamel, which makes it vulnerable to hard brushing and more damage.
    • Grinding/clenching: If you grind/clench your teeth, small cracks can develop in the tooth enamel making it sensitive to temperature changes or sweet and sour.
    • Drinking acidic juices or fizzy drinks frequently: Frequent consumption of these beverages dissolves the hard enamel and the sensitive dentine is exposed.
    • Bulimia: a characteristic of this eating disorder is self-induced vomiting. This exposes the teeth to the acidic content of the stomach leading to the dissolving of the enamel and the exposing of the sensitive dentine.
    • Bad habits: such as biting nails or pens.
    • Broken teeth or broken fillings.
    • Gum disease: If you suffer from gum disease, the gums around the teeth will recede and the sensitive part of the teeth is exposed.

If you experience teeth sensitivity, come and see the team at The Courtyard Clinic for treatment. This may vary depending on the cause.

There are many products that you can buy over the counter or you can get from your dentist to treat the symptoms of teeth sensitivity.

    Tips to minimise teeth sensitivity:

    • If you are a hard-brusher change to a softer toothbrush
    • Use toothpastes for sensitive teeth
    • Use mouthwashes containing fluoride to strengthen the teeth
    • If you are a grinder/clencher you need to see your dentist who will provide you with a bite guard to protect your teeth from the grinding forces.
    • If you have broken teeth or fillings see your dentist for treatment.

If you have sensitive teeth and would like to do something about it contact Alison and the team at The Courtyard Clinic on 01932 582 949 or book an appointment on line by clicking the link on our homepage.

  10. What are Composite fillings?

    19th October 2009 by thecourtyardclinic

    before

afterDon’t you find sometimes when you go to your dentist you just don’t know what they are talking about. Mrs. Jones we are going to put a “composite filling” on this tooth. What is a composite filling? Well let me try and explain. As long as I can remember there has been various types of filling material available, from the well know amalgam filling (metal fillings) which I might add…. The Courtyard Clinic does not use , to more modern white filling materials. Composite is the technical name for a white plastic filling material.

What does it offer to you…. the patient? Composite fillings bond (stick) to the tooth, so if the tooth was heavily broken a composite filling could be bonded to the tooth and provide more strength. Now I’m not saying this form of treatment is applicable to all cases but it is a good alternative to a large amalgam filling. Composite fillings are usually placed using rubber dam isolation so as to minimize saliva contamination and to enable the filling to be placed under optimal conditions. In some cases where there is very little tooth left alternative options may need to be considered such as porcelain crowns/ onlays/inlays.

    I hope this has helped.
